Search Engine Optimisation 101

Category: SEO – Tags: , – Brett Gossage 12:29 pm

we’ve always known about SEO or Search Engine Optimisation, but never really paid much attention to it. How wrong this can be!

You should regularly check your website details and check the ‘meta tags’ at the top of each webpage ‘source’ file (html file),to make sure you have good ‘optimisation’

Let’s do the basics:

Your webpage should have a ‘Title’ – Check the ‘title’ tag near the top of the page details, which in a few words, tells any search engine what your webpage is about.

These page ‘details’ can be found by simply right clicking in the blank background area on any webpage and selecting ‘view source’.

Then, make sure the ‘meta name’ description tells people a bit more about your site in a short sentence.

Also, the most important, the meta name ‘keywords’ are short phrases which you think people will search for in Google (and other search engines) to get to your page. Have about 4 or 5 of these phrases and don’t use just one word for any of them. Most ‘searchers’ will search using three or four words.

Every page of your website should have differences in these three categories.

I will have more posts on this as I get to grips with them myself!

Does SEO really work?

Fantastic! – I’ve just looked at my ranking in Google for my websites and I can’t believe that both of them are on the first page already – it just seems too quick!

By doing the few things that I’ve outlined in the previous blogs, I’ve increased my ranking no end – so you can too!

I’ve also noticed that by submitting your website to search engines manually (the free way!) – you get your site reviewed on various review sites as well!

Yawn! – More SEO stuff

True, but it seems that you can spend all your life learning about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in all its various guises.

Soon after you’ve done some webpage meta tag manipulation, you realise that you’ve only just begun!

It’s probably not useful just seeing what page and position you are on Google when you search for your particular ‘keyword’ – and remember that ‘keyword’ really means a ‘keyword phrase’ – a bunch of up to 4 or five carefully chosen words that specify what your website or product is all about.

I’ve just discovered ‘Pinging’ which is apparently quite important along with submitting your site to search engines either manually or paying for it to be done ‘in bulk’ for you.

Just remember, every little bit helps – don’t give up!
